This is not a faultless text, and its diary format suffers some serious pitfalls, by far the least of them the fact that Rose’s writing voice does not noticeably mature between her teenage years and the age of thirty-three. The historical accuracy is to be praised, and Gulland does an excellent job of covering an extremely complicated time without losing readability. Joséphine B. is the first in a historical fiction trilogy, styled as the diary of Empress Joséphine, or Rose, as she was known, up until her fateful marriage to Napoléon Bonaparte. ![]() I have been eager to read this book for some time, and it did not disappoint. ![]() I have been told that long titles are a no-go if you want people to actually read your work, but I would like to object to that. My first read of the year, and I’m pleased it was a good one. ![]()
