Iona grey letters to the lost6/27/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() In the present, Jess becomes determined to find out what happened to them. Fate is unkind and they are separated by decades and continents. In the midst of such uncertainty, the one thing they hold onto is the letters they write to each other. Dan is a B-17 pilot flying his bomber into Europe from a British airbase his odds of survival are one in five. In London 1942, Stella meets Dan, a US airman, quite by accident, but there is no denying the impossible, unstoppable attraction that draws them together. The next morning, a mysterious letter arrives and when she can't help but open it, she finds herself drawn inexorably into the story of two lovers from another time. Having fled from her abusive boyfriend and with nowhere to go, Jess stumbles onto a forgotten lane where a small, clearly unlived in old house offers her best chance of shelter for the night. ![]() Late on a frozen February evening, a young woman is running through the streets of London. ![]() I tried, for the sake of my own sanity, but I never even got close, and I never stopped hoping either. Now it looks like forever is finally running out. I promised to love you forever, in a time when I didn't know if I'd live to see the start of another week. Iona Grey's prose is warm, evocative, and immediately engaging her characters become so real you can't bear to let them go. An accomplished novel from a talented writer, Letters to the Lost is a stunning, emotional love story. ![]()

![]() Victor is one of the main characters of the stories. ![]() Nothing changes-it only has the appearance of change. The reader has a sense of time standing still. ![]() Ambition and challenge are short-lived with characters reverting to their comfort zone of doing nothing and going nowhere. Further complicated by limited education, unstable and absent parenting and home life, a lack of positive role models, and a fear of the unknown outside world, the characters go in circles with the nothingness of their lives. ![]() Set in the late 20th century on an Indian reservation in Spokane, Washington, we meet a group of people beset by poverty, alcoholism, drug addiction, racism, and isolationism from the society outside their reservation. The award winning movie Smoke Signals, released in 1998, is based on the short story “What It Means to Say Phoenix, Arizona” from this book. This book is a collection of inter-connected short stories that won the PEN/Hemingway Award. It’s impossible not to hear the underlying plaintive cries of this book that presents itself as a work of fiction when it captures the very essence of people who have lost their once proud cultural identity and are hardpressed to find something to replace it. ![]() Book Review: The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven by Sherman Alexie 4 Stars **** (1993, 2005, Prologue 2013) (Adult and mature Young Adult) ![]()

Brazen by kelley armstrong6/26/2023 ![]() Reality ghost show after the last fiasco. Unbeknownst to her audience, real-life necromancer-swore she’d never do another Jaime Vegas-spiritualist, entertainer and, ![]() ![]() This is a great story, but you really have to cast your mind way back in time and block out the last few of Malcolm's appearances in order to fully appreciate it. Nevertheless, by the time Nick is through with him, Malcolm has some new respect for Nick's strategic planning and fighting prowess. The theme of the story is Nick's need to prove to himself and to his pack that he can do the job when it comes to getting rid of Malcolm once and for all (except that if you have read the more recent novels and novellas, you know that is not going to happen here). Here's the worst one: "Malcolm nailed her to the ceiling, cut her throat and let her bleed out, hanging there." Some of his victims are his enemies, but others are innocents. As Malcolm zigzags back and forth across Detroit, he leaves a trail of mutilated bodies in his wake. If you have forgotten just how vicious Malcolm was in earlier books, this story will be a horrifying reminder. ![]() The story is set just nine months after Elena took over as pack leader, just about the same time the pack learned that Malcolm Danvers (Jeremy's sociopathic father) is alive-not dead for twenty years as everyone had believed. ![]()

Annihilation a novel6/26/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The other three refer to it as a tunnel, but the biologist says she feels compelled to call it a tower. They can’t even agree on what to call it. Their first big surprise is the discovery of a structure not on their maps: a submerged bunker. Along with an anthropologist, a surveyor and a psychologist, she has been sent by the government to study Area X. The action centers on Area X, the site of an earlier catastrophe that, while widely known, remains mysterious, “lingering in many people’s minds like a dark fairy tale, something they did not want to think about too closely.” But our narrator - a biologist who, like everyone else in the book, is never named - must think about it. “Annihilation” is successfully creepy, an old-style gothic horror novel set in a not-too-distant future. About 50 pages into Jeff VanderMeer’s new novel, “ Annihilation,” I felt the onset of a panic attack. ![]()

Age of myth sullivan6/25/2023 ![]() ![]() It is another rollicking tale-filled with humor and heart as much as swords and sorcery. The fruits of Sullivan’s labor rarely disappoint, and Age of Myth is no exception. ![]() Indeed, with Age of Myth he’s gone back millennia to examine just how Royce and Hadrian’s status quo came to be. And while their story is (hopefully only temporarily) over, Sullivan has no intention of abandoning their stomping ground. Royce Melborn and Hadrian Blackwater and their travails as the thief/mercenary organization Riyria. Until now, the focus has been squarely upon Messrs. Sullivan’s six-book Legends of the First Empire, a series dedicated to telling the true story of the history of Elan.Īge of Myth is the tenth book set in Sullivan’s fictional world of Elan. And from that premise springs Age of Myth, the first volume in Michael J. Churchill’s theory holds as true in Elan as it does in the real world. Separating the fact from fiction-that’s the hard part. What we take as true, as fact, as history is very often nothing more than the winner’s version of events. ![]() “History is written by the victors.” It was Winston Churchill that said it first, and the adage has been repeated countless times over the decades. ![]()
